Water as a Resource – Facts and Figures

Water is a very commonly used resource. It is used in agriculture to produce food, and in industry to produce many of the materials and items we use every day. You might be surprised to learn how much water goes into some products:

  • It takes 41,500 litres of water to produce a kilo of meat
  • It takes 500 litres to produce one orange
  • It takes over 1 million litres to produce a tonne of some metals.
  • It takes 50 litres to produce one copy of the newspaper
  • It takes about 5000 litres of water to create one kilogram of rice
  • It takes 4 litres to produce a bottle of beer
  • It takes about 1 litre to make a 100 gram chocolate bar
  • It takes about 90 litres a day to produce milk from one cow
