Sustainable FishingBecause the oceans are so large, it is difficult to keep track of exactly how many fish are in the sea and how many fish it is safe to catch. But some people believe that going back to traditional methods of fishing instead of using large driftnets might make fishing more sustainable. These traditional methods are usually less harmful to the marine environment and cause less unwanted species of fish, baby fish, and other sea animals and birds to be caught. When you buy fish check to see what type it is. Some fish, like Orange Roughy, are being dangerously overfished and many slow-growing deep sea fish are becoming rare or endangered. Try to buy fish that are local to your area. Or buy fish from fish farms that are known for their sustainable practices.
